Cross-chain tracing is one of the most challenging problems in blockchain forensics. When stolen cryptocurrency moves across different blockchains — via bridges, wrapped tokens, or atomic swaps — investigators face a fundamental break in the on-chain trail. Understanding this explains both why recovery is hard and what investigative approaches still exist.
What Is Cross-Chain Tracing?
Cross-chain tracing refers to following cryptocurrency funds as they move between different blockchains — for example, from Ethereum to BNB Chain, or from Bitcoin to a sidechain. Unlike tracing within a single blockchain where all transactions share one ledger, cross-chain movement creates discontinuities: funds appear to “vanish” on one chain and “appear” on another with no direct on-chain link between the two events.
How Scammers Use Cross-Chain Bridges to Evade Tracing
- Bridge hopping: Move funds through multiple bridge protocols across multiple chains in rapid succession, creating multiple tracing breaks
- Chain-specific privacy: Move funds to a chain with better privacy properties (Monero, Zcash) after bridging from a transparent chain
- Liquidity pool mixing: Deposit into a cross-chain DEX liquidity pool where funds mix with legitimate trading activity
- Wrapped token conversion: Convert to wrapped tokens (wBTC, wETH) across chains, where the 1:1 backing obscures which specific underlying coins are which
Cross-Chain Tracing Techniques
Despite the challenges, investigators have developed methods to follow funds across chains:
- Bridge transaction correlation: Most bridges emit on-chain events on both source and destination chains. Linking these events by timing, amount, and bridge contract interactions can trace the cross-chain movement.
- Amount correlation: When a specific non-round amount (e.g., 4.73821 ETH) appears on another chain shortly after leaving one, statistical correlation can link the two even without direct on-chain proof.
- Bridge custodian subpoenas: Centralized or semi-centralized bridge operators maintain logs of deposit and withdrawal addresses. Legal process can obtain these records.
- Off-ramp focus: Regardless of how many chains funds traverse, they eventually need to convert to fiat at a KYC exchange. Investigators focus resources on monitoring known off-ramp addresses.
Why Cross-Chain Complexity Delays Recovery
Each bridge crossing adds investigative complexity, time, and legal jurisdiction questions. A single theft that hops five chains may require legal process in five different jurisdictions and cooperation from five different bridge operators — some of which may be pseudonymous DAOs with no legal presence.
