A Ledger device lost or stolen situation is stressful — but in most cases, your cryptocurrency is completely safe. Understanding why requires knowing one fundamental fact: your crypto isn’t stored on the Ledger device. It lives on the blockchain. Your Ledger stores the private key that proves ownership. The Most Important Thing to Know First
If your Ledger device is lost or stolen, your funds are only at risk if someone also has your PIN AND your 24-word recovery phrase. The PIN alone doesn’t give access — after 3 incorrect PIN attempts, Ledger devices wipe themselves. And without both the device AND the PIN (or the recovery phrase), the funds on the associated addresses cannot be moved by anyone. Panic only if your recovery phrase was also accessible to whoever has the device.
Scenario 1: Ledger Device Lost (Recovery Phrase Safe)
If your Ledger device is lost but your 24-word recovery phrase is secure and inaccessible to others, your funds are safe. Here’s what to do:
- Do not panic. No one can access your funds without the PIN (which wipes after 3 attempts) or your recovery phrase.
- Get a new Ledger device. Order from Ledger.com directly — never from third-party marketplaces that may have tampered devices.
- Restore using your recovery phrase. During setup, choose “Restore from Recovery Phrase” and enter your 24 words. Your accounts and balances appear immediately.
- Consider moving funds to new addresses. If you want extra security, after restoring you can send funds to freshly generated addresses (same wallet, new receive addresses provide no additional security — you’d need to generate a completely new seed phrase and transfer funds).

Scenario 2: Ledger Device Stolen (Recovery Phrase Safe)
A stolen Ledger device presents slightly more urgency than a lost one, since a motivated thief may attempt PIN guessing. Your response:
- Act quickly but not in panic. The thief needs your PIN to access the device, and has only 3 attempts before wipe. Without your recovery phrase, your funds remain safe.
- If you’re concerned about PIN-based access: Your fastest protection is to restore your wallet on a new device using your recovery phrase and immediately transfer all funds to addresses generated from a brand-new seed phrase. This ensures that even if the thief somehow bypasses the PIN protection, the old addresses hold nothing.
- Report the theft to police. A police report creates documentation useful if the device is recovered or if you need to make an insurance claim.
- Order a replacement Ledger from ledger.com and restore your wallet.
Scenario 3: Ledger Device Broken or Damaged
A physically broken Ledger — water damage, screen failure, button failure, fire damage — does not mean lost funds. As long as you have your recovery phrase, hardware wallet recovery from damage is straightforward:
- Purchase a new Ledger device from ledger.com.
- During setup, choose “Restore from Recovery Phrase.”
- Enter your 24 words in the correct order.
- Your wallet is fully restored on the new device, with all accounts and balances intact.

Scenario 4: Ledger Device Lost AND Recovery Phrase Lost or Unknown
This is the most serious scenario. If both the Ledger device and the recovery phrase are unavailable, your recovery options narrow significantly:
- Check every possible location for your recovery phrase backup — safe, password manager, email drafts, bank deposit box, photos.
- Check if Ledger Live has a cached view — Ledger Live shows your balance but cannot sign transactions without the device or recovery phrase. It can confirm what addresses held funds.

Avoiding Ledger Recovery Scams
Ledger device lost or stolen scenarios are specifically targeted by scammers. Key rules: Never enter your recovery phrase on any website, never share it with “Ledger support” via chat or email (Ledger will never ask for it), and never download wallet software from any source other than ledger.com.
